This one thing stops you in your tracks

Joann lived with clutter everywhere. Clothes were strewn all over. A stack of dirty clothes in the corner, clean clothes shoved into the closet unfolded. There was even a stack of clothes to giveaway that sat in bags for months. Joann could barely walk in her bedroom without tripping over something. She couldn’t stand the mess. She complained to her friends about how she wanted to do something about it. Ever complain to a friend over something you’ve made no effort to change?

Yet, Joann took every opportunity to go have fun. She flew to exotic locales going to festivals and concerts but hated coming home to her mess. She avoided the mess like the plague. It wore on her heart.

This chaos showed up in other areas of her life, too. She wasn’t willing to let go. The mess was a protective mechanism of sorts. Avoidance was how she handled it. Joann didn’t have to deal with the harsh realities of the other areas of her life she didn’t like either.

One thing was true. Joann made no commitment to clean up the mess.

One thing you forget to be thankful for

When I was a kid, I suddenly lost my father to lung cancer. I sank into a deep depression that lasted almost 10 years. Then, one day, I realized life was short and here to be lived to the fullest. I began to explore the world and take on new adventures. I could start to feel all my senses again. I tasted the nectar of an orange. I smelled the scent of a blooming rose. I felt the warmth of the sun on my skin.

On that day, when I was 21, I became thankful for what the lost of my father taught me. Because of this experience, I became independent, followed my heart, and took on new adventurers and challenges with ease.

Decades later, the Thanksgiving table is still missing someone. Yet, I can be thankful for what the loss taught me.

How can you be thankful for the gifts of the not so fun experiences in your life?

When we learn the gifts and teachings from these experiences, we realize how blessed we are.

In the spirit of this holiday season, be thankful for the abundance that surrounds you (water, shelter, food, clothing) and the life experiences that also made you a stronger person.

What’s your commitment level to your dreams?

Elliott nervously pulled out his credit card and signed up for a half marathon. His friend George, challenged him to get serious about his health. Elliott with stomach jitters and a clenched jaw, said to himself, “What am I getting myself into?” 

Elliott was considerably overweight and vegged on the couch every night. George noticed Elliott’s health slowly deteriorating and was getting quite concerned that if he didn’t start moving his body that Elliott would probably have a heart attack.

The first week went by and Elliott didn’t budge from the couch. The second week went by and he ran one day. George called to check in on Elliott, “How’s training going?” Eliott said, he hadn’t really put any effort in. George was frustrated, fuming with madness. Then, this conversation erupted:  

George: “What would it mean to you to have energy again?”

Eliott (with a perked up voice): “It would be amazing. I could have energy for fun after work and enjoy life again, maybe even date again.” 

George: “What would you be willing to do to have this amazing and energetic life again?”

Elliott:” Absolutely everything. Thanks! I needed that swift kick in the butt.” 

Elliott started waking up at 5:00am. He ran every morning before most of the world even heard their alarm clock go off. It wasn’t easy. One morning, he threw his alarm clock off across the bedroom and realized that was the least productive use of his energy.

Yet, every day he ran. His mood was better and he felt more energy at the end of the day. This momentum allowed him to easily increase mileage each week and get up every morning.

How committed are you to your dreams? Are you willing to go the extra mile?

If your dreams have no meaning, you’ll likely find the excuses not to pursue them. And, then when the going gets tough, you stop. Meaning brings enduring motivation to your dreams.

If you never share your dreams, no one will keep you accountable to them.

It’s Your Choice How to Use These Two Precious Commodities

It’s your choice how to use these two precious commodities.

How you choose to spend the last eight weeks of 2018 is your choice. It’s no one else’s choice but yours. Yours alone.

  • You can’t blame a politician.
  • You can’t blame your boss.
  • You can’t blame your family or friends.

What you choose to spend your time and energy is your choice. Will you take ownership and responsibility in how you use these two precious commodities?

If you were to end 2018 on a high note, what two activities will you accomplish or put into motion by then? There is still 56 days left until the end of the year. That’s 1344 hours. That’s a lot of time to achieve a goal.

It’s time to take ownership of your time and energy.

  • You choose your attitude.
  • You choose what foods you consume and drink.
  • You choose the people you associate with.
  • You choose whether to engage in distracting activities or not.
  • You choose whether to exercise or not.
  • You choose how you treat others.
  • You choose how you treat yourself.

What will you propel forward in your career, life, and relationships over the next 1344 hours?

The choice is yours.

Do you lead or follow?

David was hiking solo on a trail and came upon a junction a mile in. He took out his map but then followed the group who appeared to know the way. David continued hiking along but had a hunch something was up when the trail leveled out and a field appeared. The same field for which he started from. David was perplexed. The other hiking group ahead of them stopped as well. They all congregated and looked at David’s map. They took the wrong turn. Hiking two miles out of their way.

Disappointed, David was upset at himself. He was smart enough to bring a map for a trail he had never been on before. Why did he follow the other group who didn’t even have a map? Simply. It was the easy thing to do.

Where have you lost your own way?

Where can you take the lead (or continue to lead) when you already know you have the correct tools?

How can you trust your leadership instead of following another’s footsteps?

Only you know the right path to follow. You have your own unique purpose, qualities, and experiences. Following what someone else did, does not mean it’s the right thing for you.

You Need More of This…

As we strive to increase our wealth and good fortune, we tend to sacrifice our bodies in the process. We think by doing more that we get more. However, one night of lost sleep suddenly turns into weeks of little sleep and our bodies pay the price.

Arianna Huffington, in her book Sleep Revolution, describes how she passed out one night in her bathroom and woke up bleeding from hitting her head. She passed out due to shear exhaustion. Upon doing the research, she realized that five hours of sleep a night makes your cognition operate as if you were drunk. How good are your decisions if you were drunk versus rested?

Too many of us, give and give until there’s nothing left. Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for servant leadership. It is not selfish to take of yourself. (Yes, ladies, especially you!) Even in an airplane, the flight attendant says put your face mask on first, then help others.

The more output you have the more input your body requires. Olympic athletes don’t down a triple caramel macchiato with a triple shot before their race so why would you do this before a big day at the office? Google Executives are known for doing meditation for focus and using float tanks for relaxation.

Properly fueling and resting your body is the key to sustained energy throughout the day.

Self-care is not selfish. It’s the most essential part to fuel you for the day. As playing on a see-saw when you were a kid, there’s a balance between giving and receiving.

The Sneaky Habit That Can Ruin Everything

Most people today run from one thing to the next without thinking. It could from meeting to meeting. From home to a sporting event.

Few people stop and think about if what they are doing truly serves them, their loved ones, or their life’s mission.

The same holds true in our relationships. We think that if someone has been around for 10+ years, they’ll be around forever.

The problem is that people eventually get bored. Whether its at work, in a relationship, or how they go about life. They seek something different, something new.

People get complacent. This is a scary word. This is a bad habit that can take a once awesome part of your life and flush it straight down the drain. This can be one of the single biggest things that ends 10, 20 year marriages.

When we stop giving something the love and attention it deserves, we start taking it for granted.

The opposite of complacency is novelty.

What can you do to bring more playful fun into your world?

How can you bring a little extra spark to your relationship?

Can you learn a new skill at work?

How can you challenge yourself with a new hobby?  

Where can you add more novelty into your life?

Novelty stretches you and expands you past your current limitations. These sparks will add more fun back into you life, career, and relationships.

Growth is not optional

When we stay in the same patterns, our ideas get stifled and our relationships get complacent. This leaves us frustrated. Here’s an example of why growing is so important.

Blockbuster was a growing retail store that rented movie DVDs in the 1990s.  Blockbuster grew rapidly and became anchor stores for every major retail center, grossing over a billion dollars in revenue each year. The problem is Blockbuster didn’t adapt to the changing needs of their customers and they failed to adopt new technology platforms. Soon Netflix, a simpler, easier, more convenient model to rent movies started eating their profits. Blockbuster even turned down the opportunity to purchase Netflix. Over the next few years, Blockbuster’s sales further declined and they went out of business.

What can you learn from this?

To grow, we must adapt and adopt a new way of thinking and doing. Life changes in the blink of an eye. If we stay stagnant, others will beat us to the punch or our relationships will start to deteriorate.

Bring your dreams to fruition

Ever had that dream but didn’t know how to make it happen? You did some research but never took those bold steps. Why do you leave your deepest priorities sitting on the side of the road waiting to be run over? It’s time to take it back.

There’s exactly three months left in 2018. It’s time to make this the best year of your life. No matter what has already happened – You have the choice to chart the direction you want to go. You are the captain of your ship. No one else! It’s time to bunker down and get the work done.

Here’s how:

What seeds did you plant earlier this year that need some nourishment, love, and attention? Your dreams and desires require constant ongoing attention through daily action.

One hour a day for the rest of the year is over 90 hours. What can you move forward in those 90 hours? Your health? A new skill to learn? A project to bring to completion.

What weeds need to be removed so it can thrive and grow? Fall is all about clearing out your garden. Pulling up the overgrowth and giving the plants – your dreams and desires – the room to grow. What distractions can you eliminate?

The only difference between a dream and a goal is a deadline.


It’s time to stop wasting your precious time and get to work on your priorities. The world needs you, your unique gifts, your talents.


I want you to play big. I want you to play all out for the rest of the year! Go get it!

This one tip will make you a better leader

We often think the more we do, the better we advance our careers and lives. We constantly give to others and stay busy non-stop. We run from meeting to meeting and can barely think by 2pm.

We eventually feel drained, exhausted, and unappreciated. This translates into

  • Unhealthy behaviors – Ever eat the entire cookie bag? Ever gain 20 pounds in 6 months?
  • Reactive tendencies – Ever express anger to someone who didn’t deserve it?
  • Isolate ourselves – Ever pull away from the things you love because you had no energy for them?

It’s time to stop the madness! Here’s how:

Take short breaks every hour. 1-2 minutes. This will energize you from head to toe. Yes, it’s literally and figuratively that easy.

  1. Stretch. This opens up your body and allows you to relax. When we’re tense, we get uptight and moody.
  2. Move your body. This increases your blood flow and circulation.  Walk to Starbucks. Stop at the door and turn around. All you really needed was the walk, not the extra caffeine and sugary snack.
  3. Close your eyes. Your eyes are constantly strained form looking at electronic screens.

Why does this make you a better leader? If you start employing this practice, your team and colleagues and superiors will take notice. You become a role model for better health and increased engagement. Who doesn’t want a better functioning team, ready to be more effective, and leave on time at the end of the day?

This is your time to have the energy, engagement and effectiveness every leader wants. Self-care is the new role model style. Take care of you to have more energy and motivate others.
