Do Your Habits Propel You Into Success?

habits and character

When you sit down and think about the same routines you do every day, consider this – Do your habits enhance your day or make if it more difficult?

Practices begin with how you start your day, from the moment your alarm goes off and how you wake up.  Do you jump out of bed, energized to begin your day or do you hit the snooze button and roll over for 5 more minutes?

Think about it for a second. How do you feel when you wake-up? Do you wake-up groggy because you stayed up late watching TV or checking the latest social media post or did you get sufficient quality sleep to begin the day? Your morning is directly affected by your prior evening.

These small habits turn into how much energy you have for the day. This energy translates into your attitude for the day, the mental capacity you have for projects, and interactions with colleagues partners, or kids.

In my own life, I’ve seen how these very small habits can make or break my day. These small habits are not life altering decisions yet they lead to profound experiences and how I interact with others.

Case in point. On Saturday evening, I was quite tired after a training day in the mountains and hanging out with new friends. I hit the sack so I would have energy for my 3rd and final training day on Sunday. Yet, I didn’t perform my nightly habits of packing what I need for the next day. As a result, I took an extra 10 minutes in the morning. And, guess what? I was 10 minutes late for my class on Sunday. I was embarrassed to be late and certainly wasn’t proud of myself nor did I want to showcase that this is who I am on a regular basis.

Let’s take a closer look:

What daily habits make you successful for the day?

What habits do you need to stop doing to create more success?

This constant evaluation of what works and what doesn’t is key to adjusting where you focus your time and how this time serves you.

Do you have a habit you want to release? Try this short exercise from the late, Dr. Wayne Dyer : “You leave old habits behind by starting out with the thought, ‘I release the need for this in my life’.”

This week find some quite time and take a deep dive into your habits and see where the habits propel you forward in your dreams or hold you back.

Are You Sowing the Seeds to Reap the Harvest?

sowing seedsWith Spring equinox upon us, the flowers and trees are budding and ready to burst into bloom. Yet, we forget the process of blooming doesn’t happen in a vacuum. First, the seeds are planted or spread amongst the wind. Second, the plants are nourished in the soil. And, third, the seeds soak up rain fall and moisture in the soil. Our dreams come to fruition in a similar manner.

When we think of our dreams and aspirations, they are merely seeds. It’s an idea of what we want life to look like or experience. Our dreams do not grow into reality unless they receive nourishment through attention and action. And, it’s the right type of nourishment that’s key. It’s about attention and action that’s fully aligned to the dream. Distractions are saying to your dream, it’s okay, you’re not important to me right now. (Wow, that’s a reality check!). Would you go put acid on a growing plant? Probably not. Yet how often, do we let other “things” get in the way? Way too often, right?

Consider water as our support system to nourish our dreams. Dreams don’t become reality in isolation. How many people know the dreams you’re pursuing? If no one knows, you’re likely not getting the support you need to bring your amazing dream to fruition. Too often, we’re afraid to tell people our dreams. What will others think? How will we be perceived? It doesn’t matter what they think. Your dream is all about YOU! By sharing with others what you want to accomplish, you create buy-in for others to support you. And, usually this happens in miraculously ways you never even thought of.

Don’t let your dream be just a dream. Go after it! Turn your dream into reality! Seeds are planted months before you reap the harvest. Now is the time to properly nourish your dream, gain support in pursuing the dream. This, in turns, that allows you to reap your harvest.

What big goal are you going after this year? What are you doing to nourish that dream? Who knows about your dream and supports you?

Together we can make your dreams become reality. PM me for a complimentary session.

Wishing you an abundant, joyful, and prosperous day!

do it anywaysAre you afraid to lay it all out on the table? Exposing every inch you may not want to share. Are you scared to be vulnerable? Here’s a short story to think about how you give your power away to others:

Yesterday, I was craving some deep stretching. My hips were tight and my shoulder barely engaged. I threw on some workout clothes and a jacket and headed to the yoga studio yesterday. In the locker room, I found a locker and put my wallet, phone, and shoes in. I took off my jacket to realize – in horror – that I only had my sports bra on. What!?!? I whispered to myself, I don’t have another shirt to cover my upper body. EEEEK! I recently gained a few pounds and was completely self-conscious of my appearance and slight belly. Yikes! What do I do? I drew out two solutions. I can go home and skip the class. Or, I could completely careless and focus on my own objectives – take the yoga class. I took a deep breath and chose to walk into the yoga studio.

How much time do you waste wondering what other people think about you? If you should do this or do that instead? Do you waste time by sitting on a decision for days, months, years until you get a sign from someone else on what to do? Why do we ask other people’s opinions versus just going with our instinct? Think about where in your life you give power to others.

If you want to take some time back in your life and free up your mind, stop giving people choice over your direction.

Wishing you an abundant, prosperous, and joyful day!

Stop the busyness, look up, and appreciate the beauty surrounding you. What can you admire? Perhaps it’s the shapes in your office, the wispy clouds in the sky, the trees that are ready to break out of winter and bud into spring, the chatter of people drinking their cup of coffee, kids playing. Take in the smell. Notice the shapes. Take in the sounds. Notice the connections and watch the flow of motion from one to the other. What do you notice about yourself?

So often, we go straight to our day – checking emails, making phone calls, checking the latest news blimp or social media post and go straight into action. However, we forget to stop and taking in the beauty that surrounds us.

The other day, beauty literally smacked me in the face. After a day of fun activities in the mountains, the sun with setting fast in the sky with beautiful hues of red, orange, and purple. My friend that was driving said – WoW! Its gorgeous! We pulled over on the side of the road took a quick picture and admired the beauty.

Stop! Take a moment. Where do you need to stop and admire the beauty more?

By stopping, you gain perspective. You notice what’s really going on around you. You notice how you’re feeling in the moment, you notice how others are feeling, and you read and feel the energy around you.

Being present in the moment allows you to take stock of what’s really going on. Stop with hustle and bustle and enjoy the precious life we have.

Wishing you a prosperous, abundant, and joyful day!

Have You Ever Made a Mistake?

This past Sunday the Oscars made headlines with a memorable mistake. The wrong winner was announced for a highly coveted Oscar. There was criticism galore. While I agreed this was a big mistake, I thought how dare anyone criticize them. It’s a bit self-righteousness. I thought – haven’t you ever made a mistake in your life?

Fail Fast. Fail Often. Be Courageous.

I often see clients who are afraid to take that big step forward. They want to know exactly what is going to happen. They are stuck in paralysis because they want to analyze the situation until they figure out every possible scenario that may happen. They are afraid, they may fail. They think if this fails, I’m a failure. This is not true! If the action failed, it doesn’t mean you are a failure. Instead this courageous movement means you took brave action to change course.

I’ll share how this has played out in my life. The past two weeks, I’ve been bold – creating and crafting – thinking big. Yet, I had two setbacks. The first, I accidently sent 6 emails simultaneously instead of 1 email to folks who heard me speak. Talk about embarrassing! The second, I submitted for a coveted TEDx talk. Hitting that send button was a huge step for me. I was soooo excited only to learn I didn’t get selected.

Here’s what I gained and learned in the process. The more I go for those big, scary steps, the more courageous I get, the more willing I am to take the step into what’s possible. I figured out how to make my systems work. And, the talk allowed me to craft language that was rattling in my head and put it into a cohesive, readable text. In the end, I didn’t fail. I learned and grew.

Where can you learn from past experiences?

What courageous leap will you take this week?

How Do You Truly Connect With People?

Humans desire interaction and connection. Some may like interactions more than others but we can agree we all desire connection in some form or another. Connection is not just about engaging with others. It’s also about connecting with ourselves. If we don’t know who we are, where we want to go, or understand what’s going on within our internal dialogue, how can we truly relate to someone else. How can you be present and listen when there’s 900 things meandering in your mind?

In our society, it’s common to disconnect and numb ourselves (can you relate):

-watch tv

-endless hours on the internet

-playing games on your phone

-any distraction

-doing something else while talking on the phone

-spend hours on social media

-eat too much

-drink too much (or dampen our senses with stronger substances)

Instead try this:

-call someone you’ve been thinking about

-engage in meaningful conversation (instead of how are you? Ask, what’s been the best part of your day?)

-do something that brings you joy

-do something with someone else that brings them joy

-send a thank you note to a friend, family member or colleague

-do something that get you excited

-do something that relaxes you

Instead of disconnecting, let’s truly connect to ourselves and with others. Take a minute today and let someone you know you care or what they mean to you.

Can you do that?

Can you do that?“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.”
― Henry Ford

I love this quote from Henry Ford. It exemplifies what mindset is all about. Thinking you can is the first step in laying the foundation of your dreams. The second step is taking the courageous action towards your dream. Then you begin to lay down your courageous path foundation.

Let’s look back on this week’s events. No matter if you watched the Super Bowl or not or what team you routed for, we can agree the 20+ point comeback by the New England Patriots was spectacular. It was all about mindset. The Patriots thought they could come back. And, guess what, they absolutely did!

Where in your life right now, do you need a comeback? Where do you think you CAN do something?

We often seek the external validation of others for our brilliant ideas and actions. Instead, believe in your own capabilities to figure it out. Thinking you can is half the battle.

Go forth this week and do something unbelievable.

Are You Seeking a Survival Enforcer or a Thrive Strategist?

Survive or Thrive

The choice is yours. What mode do you generally sit in, survive or thrive?

Are you scraping bottom, rushing from one thing to the next, aimlessly wandering on to the next task on your ever growing to do list or just making ends meet? Perhaps you feel good because you’re always busy. And, since you’re busy this gives the appearance to others that you’re working on something important. You enjoy the comfort of your surroundings and don’t want to rock the boat. I mean if you rock the boat or steer it in a different direction, you may get hurt, right?!? And, people may not like us anymore. We definitely want to be well liked by everyone. And, the thought of failing at something would just be — horrible.

Or, are you focused, carefully planning each step towards your dreams. You grow with every step, either learning from the mistake and attempting a new approach or figuring out the next step after that one. You adjust the direction of your boat based on what you’ve learned and how they may apply to the next step. This allows you to be open to what’s coming next and allow for new opportunities to arise in the process.

Where do you fall? The first is survival mode. Its where a lot of people sit. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we seek safety and security first. Do we have shelter, food and water? Yet, we also want to be validated and stable, and free of fear. This craving for stability and security keeps us trapped in a box. We love the box. It’s safe and we don’t get hurt. Security is knowing exactly what happen when. It’s if I do this, X will happen. Yet, then, we feel stuck in a box. Sound familiar?

The second mode is thriving, to flourish, prosper, and succeed. In order to flourish, we must triumphant over what holds us stuck. It’s not easy to make ourselves vulnerable. (Did you know that vulnerable is the antonym for security?) It’s not easy to fail and pick ourselves back up, assess what happened, and apply the lessons learned. I mean – that’s down right difficult. It’s not easy to take the courageous leap into the unknown without a clear point of where we may land. Yet we want to feel what it’s like to flourish – to thrive – to succeed. Yet we recognize when we give up our attachment to the outcome, we will likely get something bigger and better than we expected.

The choice is yours. Do you seek a Survival Enforcer? Or, do you seek a Thriving Strategist? If it’s the latter, Courageous Path’s program offers the steps and know how to keep you on the thriving cycle and teaches you how to take the courageous steps to keep you thriving.

Where Does Your Time Go?

While doing an errand, I had to parallel park. Easy, peezy, right? Well, this time it was truly difficult. Say what? Why? My car windows and mirrors were soooooo dirty from driving on salty, snowy roads in the mountains, I literally could not see out them. It was like looking into a cardboard box knowing something was on the other side but you couldn’t tell what.

Recognizing this was acceptable to drive with either, I headed to a do-it-yourself car wash. It was the first place I could think of close to where I was. So, I’ve never been to wash-it-yourself car wash before. I went because I figured I would save money and time. Well, that was sooooo not the case. I spent more money throwing quarters in and doing it myself then just going to a drive-through car wash. Not to mention, I got myself dirty in the process. More time, more money, plus dirty. Not really what I wanted.

So, why do I share this? Simple. Sometimes we think doing it ourself is faster and cheaper. The reality is – this time it was not.

Think about –  where does your time go? Do you evaluate where you can save time? Take a few minutes and evaluate how and where you spend your time on a daily basis? Yes, I’ll wait. Really. This is something you should take a moment and do right now.

Let’s figure out together how you can be more efficient with your time.  Sign-up now for a free strategy session to move evaluate where you are and where you want to go.

Wishing you a wonderful and efficient day!
